The In-Office Teeth Whitening Treatment Process
Treatment Plan
At your consultation, you’ll discuss your needs with your dentist. If teeth whitening isn’t right for your situation, we can discuss alternatives. But if teeth whitening is the best option to help you smile brighter, we’ll provide a treatment plan that allows you to achieve your goals.
Custom Trays
To start your at-home teeth whitening treatment, your dentist will take digital models of your teeth with an intraoral scanner. These models will be sent to a dental lab, where a set of reusable, durable custom whitening trays will be built for your teeth.
Instructions & Application
Once your custom trays have been built, you’ll come back into our office to get your trays from your dentist, as well as a set of whitening products and instructions on how to use your whitening trays. Then, you’ll simply follow these instructions and whiten your teeth in the comfort of your own home.

Teeth whitening, when supervised by a qualified dentist, won't harm your teeth. Dentists ensure the use of safe whitening products and prevent over-whitening. However, excessive use or improper application of peroxide-based whiteners can weaken teeth and damage enamel. To avoid risks, it's wise to steer clear of over-the-counter (OTC) teeth whitening kits from sources like Amazon, which may contain dangerously high peroxide levels. If you opt for non-professional whitening, stick to ADA-approved products with lower peroxide concentrations to protect your enamel.
Effective teeth whitening products fall into two categories. First, there are abrasive whiteners, like toothpaste with baking soda, that gently remove plaque and surface stains without harming enamel. However, it's essential to avoid charcoal toothpaste, which may be too abrasive and potentially damage enamel. Stick to ADA-approved whitening toothpaste for safety. Secondly, chemical whiteners containing peroxide are known to work effectively. They are available both over-the-counter and through dentists, but it's recommended to consult with a dentist for desired results while ensuring your teeth are protected from over-whitening. For a comprehensive assessment of safe and effective teeth whitening options, talk to your dentist.
While the precise cause of whitening-induced sensitivity isn't fully understood, it is likely connected to "dentinal microtubules." These tiny channels connect tooth enamel to interior nerves, allowing us to feel sensations in our teeth. The theory suggests that peroxide-based whiteners expose these microtubules by slightly weakening the enamel, which can lead to increased sensitivity. As enamel remineralizes and strengthens after whitening, the microtubules are sealed, which can reduce sensitivity. This explains why sensitivity caused by teeth whitening typically only lasts a few days.
